We know that babies like to eat, play and sleep a lot. In fact, babies tend to sleep a lot most of the time. Often times we are too busy with other daily household chores or office work that we cannot stay in the room and watch his or her every movement while asleep. Yet we know the importance of monitoring him or her while asleep because he or she might fall down from the crib or may wander across the room unsupervised. They may also be hungry and cry incessantly and develop abdominal colic from too much crying. Thus, baby monitors were invented for this purpose: to monitor our babies when we do not have the time to do so.

Baby monitors are indeed useful. They keep track of babies’ crying and make us do other useful work either around the house or even outside the house. The baby monitor enables parents and caregivers to receive sounds coming from the infant while not being in the room. This device sends sounds over a one –way radio frequency receiver. The distance with which it projects sound varies among the different models. Most of these baby monitors work at a distance of around 150 feet. They should be plugged in at a site which is not more than 10 feet away from the baby’s bed. The transmitter is placed in the room where the baby is. The baby monitor has a portable receiver that is may be carried around by the caregiver wherever he or she may be within the house or in the yard.
The baby monitor uses a radio frequency that is used to transmit sounds from the baby to you. This radio frequency is the same as that found in cordless telephones and in other radio transmissions that are used in police work and emergency response teams. There are some higher models with the abilities to have higher frequencies and with lesser interferences. One drawback of using baby monitors is that it can interfere with signals coming from other baby monitors in neighbouring houses. However, some baby monitors are equipped with scramblers that can minimize interferences and can even remove them. They work by turning the baby monitors turned on at its both ends. There are some cheaper baby monitors that run on batteries, however they may be unreliable and may give the false assurance to parents that they can hear the baby’s sounds when it wakes up. These cheaper monitors may work but not for a very long time.

In looking for a high-quality baby monitor, you should look for advanced features that are sure to work in many scenarios and environments. Examples of some good baby monitors that come at a reasonable price are Intercom and Evenflo. These baby monitors issue a beeping warning when the device is low on battery, leaving an option for you to turn down the sound and noise. It is also equipped with a flashing light when you do not want to disturb other members in the same room. There are some baby monitors that are two-way, allowing parents to speak to the child to soothe him or her back to sleep. There are even some baby monitors equipped with video displays which can send pictures back to the receiver through digital wireless signalling. However, these video-equipped baby monitors may come with a hefty price.

A new technology among baby monitors nowadays is the use of high-speed microprocessors that can even detect the baby’s movement. If there is no movement detected in the baby for more than 20 seconds, an alarm goes on. Baby monitors with motion detection capabilities are more expensive than the traditional sound-sensing baby monitors.
